One-year remembrance of Red Lake’s Bill Blake

Thank you, Minneapolis Police Department, Chief Dolan and Mayor R.T. Rybak.
As the Red Lake Nation readies to commemorate the life of one Minneapolis
police officer Sgt. William “Bill” Blake, on Feb. 24 and 25 by hosting the 4th annual
Drug and Gang Summit. We would also be remiss by not recognizing the amazing
support and care provided to Bill by the Minneapolis Police Department, Chief
Dolan and Mayor R.T. Rybak.
As life-long friends and fellow tribal members, Bill Blake and I shared good times
as well as we supported one another through the tough times. As Bill struggled
with his heart disease over that last years of his life, he fought selflessly to better
the streets of Minneapolis, to better the lives of Indian people throughout the
country, Bill knew and was thankful for the support he was given in his trying times.
As he lived his final days, he spoke to me of the support shown to him while he lay
in the hospital, the support of his police brethren and others that came to his side.
Of two visits in particular that Bill was very proud of were the visits from Chief Tim
Dolan and Mayor R.T. Rybak. Bill was so proud and thankful to be a part of his city
of Minneapolis family.
He said, “I really didn’t know the care and love these guys have for each other, it
makes me proud to be apart of this cop family.” I also am thankful to his police
brethren, Chief Dolan, and Mayor Rybak because Bill was a wonderful leader in
the Indian community. His love and compassion drove a desire he had to improve
he quality of life for everyone and he loved being a Minneapolis police officer. The
Indian community and Minneapolis Police Department lost a wonderful man and a
wonderful leader with the passing of Bill Blake and we are hopeful that his vision
and hope for improved communities will live on.
