8th Grade Boys Pacesetter Regional Tournament
By Chris Jourdain

Game#1 Pequot Lakes.
Due to weather conditions, this game started 20 mins late, but started off a
defensive battle as both teams offense was struggling and the halftime score was
9-3 Red Lake. The Warriors came out strong and maintained control until the
Patriots switched D and triple teamed the point guard at halfcourt which forced lots
of turnovers and gained them the lead late in the game. The Warriors where down
1, and fouled with 40 seconds left to send the big man to the line who missed both
and Ira Spears came down and hit a clutch 3 from the top of the key to go up 1, the
D was then able to force a turnover off the full court press and score again for a
26-23 lead, but the Patriots still got off a last second 3/4 quart prayer that went
unanswered and RL held on to the win in a very rough and physical win that had 2
players uniforms bloodied up. Spears 9pts, 1 reb, 4 TO's; Patterson 6pts, 3rebs;
Jourdain 2pts, 2 TO's; Cook 2pts, 3blocks; Jones 3pts, 3rebs; Needham 2pts,
2rebs; Kingbird 2pts, 2 steals; Chaboyea 2pts; Grauman 0.

Game #2 Cass Lake
The Panthers came in undeafeated against the Ogichidaag this season, including
some big double digit wins and 2 of their 5 losses. This game wouldn't be that way
as RL came out strong behind defense and fast breaks to hold a lead ealry, before
fatigue set in as both teams went at each other hard, and saw more blood drawn
on floor burns. Cass Lake held the lead at half, and held on thru the 2nd half as RL
made some crucial turnovers against their press and also gave up 9 points late on
offensive rebounds that allowed Cass Lake to claim a 58-46 victory in a great
game of basketball. Ira Spears led scoring with 16 before fouling out with 2
minutes left. Jimmy Jourdain hit 11, Dave Cook 4pts, 11 rebs; Boo Chaboyea
celebrated his birthday with the team and hit 2 big 3's in the 2nd half to cut the lead
to 1, Russ KB with 4pts, 3 rebs, Justice Needham 3 pts, 1reb, Tyrell Patterson had
2 big free throws late and 3 rebs, Jalen Jones was held to 0 pts, but grabbed 3
rebs, Grauman also was held scoreless in this one. Cass Lake went on to claim an
overtime victory over Perham and then claim the Championship!
Game #3 Northome/ Keliher

The teams played each other once this year with K/N geting the win, they have a
couple 6' 3" kids who are excellent players, and some small guards. RL came out
strong and held a 25-20 lead but ended up losing it.  Spears had 6; Jourdain 4pts,
5rebs; Cook 8pts, 8 rebs; Jones 6pts, 9rebs; Needham 0pts, 3rebs; Kingbird
4pts, 10rebs; Chaboyea 3pts; Patterson 3pts, 1 reb; Grauman 0.

Game #4 Leech Lake
This was the battle for 7th place and both teams were very familair with each other
playing each other numerous times over the summer. The Leech Lake coach, Phil
Johnson was not able to be present for this game as his 7th grade sqaud was in
the Championship game in Fosston. The boys came out very loose and were
having lots of fun with each other with the half time score of 19-19. Things got a
little more competitive in the 2nd half and remained close before the Warriors got
some huge buckets on som enice assists to claim the victory. Spears 14pts,
3rebs; Jourdain 0pts, 3rebs; Cook played limited minutes hampered by a sore
knee had 2pts, 2rebs; Patterson played through a knee injury suffered in game #1
and came up huge with 12 pts, Jones had 14pts, 5rebs, Kingbird 8pts, 1reb;
Needham 2 pts, 2rebs; and birthday boy Chaboyea got the gift of playing the entire
game hit 2 big free throws on a technical foul late in the game ended with 2;
Grauman 0, but had lots of hustle and great defense.

This ends their season at 22-7, and for the 3rd year in a row at he Pacesetter
Regional the team they have lost to in the 2nd round has went on to win the
championship. They will be playing May 7th at the 3rd annual Red Lake Youth
