9th Grade Pacesetter Regional Tournament
By Chris Jourdain
The 9th gr boys took part in the Pacesetter Regional Tournament in Fosston on
Saturday April 9th. 13 teams from across the northland made up this years
bracket. First up was Park Christian for the Warriors, and the game started out a
battle as they had a good half court offense and good shooters, the halftime score
was 27-19, before the full court prress was put on and the game was changed, and
the Warriors ran away with it 55-33 led by Ryan Holthusen and Devin Neadeau's
16 pts.
Next up was Park Rapids who had the serious height advantage with a 6' 5"
Center who was intimidating to say the least, in a defense filled 1st half the score
was 15-9 Park Rapids at the half. In the halftime huddle we saw that we could fast
break if we could get the rebounds, and in the 2nd half thats exactly what we did to
outscore them36- 20 and win 45-35 led by Holthusen's 17pts, 7 rebs, 8 assists,
and floor leadership as we ran out alot of clock at the end and score on some
beautiful assists down low to hold the lead and get the win in a total team
defensive effort, led by Ira Spears' 7 steals.
This set us up in the semi finals facing Roseau, but with a 4 hour wait in between
games. Roseau dominated the boards and held a 24-15 lead at the half, and were
able to claim the lead in a real rough and physical game, that saw lots of calls go
against us that we were unable to overcome, and the loss to knock us out of the
championship game, and into the 3rd place game. Holthusen led scoring with 20,
and Spears 9 and 6 steals in the loss.
3rd place game was against Perham in yet another rough game that saw
Neadeau and Spears go out with leg injuries after taking hits to the side of the
knee early in the game, Perham was ahead 22-20 at the half. We were not able to
stop 1 of their players and they picked apart our defense late and get the win,
Holthusen ended with 12, Spears 8, Neadeau 9, Marcus Beaulieu 4 points and 6
rebounds, Alex Barrett with 4 points and 7 rebounds in the losing effort.
The team was made up of Ryan Holthusen, Trevenn Beaulieu, Devin Neadeau,
Marcus Beaulieu, Alex Barrett, and 8th graders Ira Spears, Dave Cook and Jimmy
Jourdain.
