Bemidji, Red Lake men fined $4,200 for illegal ice

Two men have been fined a total of $4,200 for multiple fishing violations in Ontario,
Canada.
According to a press release from the Ministry of Natural Resources in Canada:
Robert Cook of Red Lake was fined $1,400 for having seven walleye over the
legal limit and $800 for having four walleye over the limit on a separate day.
Glenn Ostlund of Bemidji was fined $1,000 for fishing without a license and having
four walleye in his possession.
Both men also were fined $500 each for importing live minnows into Ontario for
bait.
Justice of the Peace Robert McNally heard the case in the Ontario Court of
Justice, Kenora, on April 12, 2011.
The court heard that on March 10, 2010, Cook and Ostlund were checked by
Ministry of Natural Resources conservation officers while fishing in the Mica Point
area on Lake of the Woods. Prior to the check, the officers watched both men
catch several walleye which Cook would then hide in a partially drilled,
snow-covered auger hole nearby. The officers found that Ostlund did not have a
fishing license but had four walleye in his possession, and Cook had seven
walleye over his legal limit. Additionally, both men were using live minnows
imported from the United States.
Cook originally told officers he had not fished the day before, but an investigation
determined he had fished the same location and used the same method to hide
his catch. Cook later admitted to keeping four walleye over his legal limit on March
9, 2010.
