spring

The Blackduck baseball team opened the season with three victories as the
Drakes blanked Kelliher-Northome 10-0 in their opener and swept Walker-
Hackensack-Akeley 21-0 and 12-1 last week.

This week the Drakes were scheduled to host Cass Lake-Bena (Monday),
entertain Pine River Backus in a doubleheader (Tuesday) and visit Lake of the
Woods (Thursday).

In the season-opener against K-N Lucas Krabbenhoft went the distance for the
shutout. Trey Volk and Brandon Beck each scored twice and contributed an RBI
while Dylan Weisert and Shane Fenske had a pair of hits. Aaron Nissen added a
double.

Michael Dexter allowed only one hit and struck out nine in the 21-0 victory over
WHA. Offensively Cody Bergquist and Jacob Krabbenhoft had three hits and
scored three runs. Krabbenhoft also collected three RBI. Tanner Stromberg had a
hit and drove in two runs.

Bergquist handled the mound duties in the 12-1 win over WHA and the junior
allowed only three hits while fanning five.

Volk had a double, an RBI and scored a run while Luke Binkley scored three runs
and stole a pair of bases. Michael Dexter also had two RBI.

In three games the Blackduck pitching staff is yet to allow an earned run.
Offensively the Drakes have 95 plate appearances and have struck out only seven
times.

Cass Lake-Bena is 2-1 in the early going as the Panthers opened with 12-0 and 5-
2 wins over Lake of the Woods before losing 6-5 at Nevis.

This week CL-B is scheduled to visit Blackduck on Monday and Bagley on
Tuesday before closing with Thursday’s home game against WHA.

Wes Moe tossed a 1-hitter in the 12-0 victory over LOW. Offensively Jake Ellis,
Ben Ruzek and Taylor Humphrey each ripped a pair of hits. Moe scored three runs
while Caleb Fisher, Humphrey and Ellis scored twice.

In the rematch Chad Wittner allowed only four hits while the Panthers had eight,
including three by Ellis.

A year ago Cass Lake-Bena finished unbeaten in the regular season but last
Thursday Nevis made sure that wouldn’t happen this spring as the Tigers nipped
the Panthers 6-5.

Nevis scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh when Nick Halfmann delivered
a 2-run single.

CL-B had taken a 5-4 lead with two in the first, two in the fifth and one in the sixth.

Wittner and Bryan Vail had two hits for the Panthers.

Red Lake takes an 0-2 record into this week’s action as the Warriors lost 18-3 to
Bagley and 12-5 to Kelliher-Northome.

K-N is 1-1 after losing to Blackduck.

Weather permitting Red Lake will host Nevis and visit Laporte this week. K-N is
scheduled to host Laporte and travel to Bagley.

Like the Drakes, Bagley is 3-0 in the early going. The Flyers opened with the win
over Red Lake and followed that performance with 17-0 and 8-3 victories over
Lake of the Woods.

Bagley’s schedule includes games against Crookston, Cass Lake-Bena and K-N
this week.

Laporte opened with a pair of losses, falling 11-1 to Nevis and 10-0 to Pine River.
The Wildcats hope to rebound this week against K-N and Red Lake.

SB teams begin seasons

Kelliher-Northome and Bagley won their softball openers last week. K-N downed
Remer 18-8 while the Flyers edged East Grand Forks 13-12.

Other softball results saw Laporte lose 13-1 to Nevis and 25-2 to Pine River, Cass
Lake-Bena fall 12-11 to Deer River but nip WHA 13-12, Blackduck lose 13-3 to
Fosston and Red Lake drop a 36-1 decision to WHA and a 13-2 verdict to Nevis.

CL-B track and field

The Panthers participated in a relay meet hosted by Deer River last week. In the
shot put the top throw of each team member was added and CL-B’s team of
Marcus Roy, Crag Brodeur, Josh Gregerson and Dylan Morris placed third.

The same group was second in the weightman’s 4x100 relay.

Brodeur, Morris, Jesse Kjensmo and Gregerson teamed for a fifth in the mixed
1600 relay and the unit of Brodeur, Morris, Gregerson and coach April Westlund
was third in the 4x100 relay, an event in which a coach had to participate.

The Panthers are scheduled to return to Deer River today.
