Darion Cobenais Selected Boys & Girls
Club Youth of the Year
Red Lake Youth Will Vie for State Title and Scholarship
By Michelle Graves/Michael Meuers
Club staff unanimously selected Darion Cobenais as Red Lake Nation Boys &
Girls Club Youth of the Year 2010. Chosen from among eleven other local
outstanding youth, Cobenais will compete against other Boys & Girls club
members for the Minnesota State Youth of the Year title and a $1,000 college
scholarship from Tupperware Brands Corporation. The competition will be held in
May in St. Paul.
As the new youth of the Year for Red Lake Nation Boys & Girls Club, 16 year-old
Cobenais is a true example of an extraordinary young man recognized by the Boys
& Girls Club of America (BGCA) for his sound character, leadership skills and
willingness to give back to the community said a club press release.
“Being named Youth of the Year is the highest honor a Boys & Girls Club member
can receive”, said Michelle Graves, Red Lake Nation Boys & Girls Club Program
Director. As BGCA’s premier youth recognition program, Youth of the Year
recognizes outstanding contributions to a member’s family, school, community and
Boys & Girls Club, as well as overcoming personal challenges and obstacles.
Graves said that the Youth of the Year program encourages Club members to
reach their full potential by achieving academic success, leading healthy lifestyles
and contributing to their communities. “Youth of the Year honorees are shining
examples and living proof that GREAT futures start at the Boys & Girls Club”, she
Cobenais is a sophomore attending the Red Lake High School, ISD District #38,
and has been a member of the Red Lake Nation Boys & Girls Club for three
years. He worked as a Junior Program Assistant the past two summers and
volunteered over 50 hours at Club. He is a dedicated young man with excellent
leadership skills. “Darion was so committed as Junior Staff, that he saved money
to buy a bike so he wouldn't be late for work each day”, said a proud Graves.
Graves reflected that Cobenais is not the shy youth he was at the beginning
anymore. “He is a positive outgoing teen that younger club members look to
emulate. He has made a strong imprint on the minds of club members”, Graves
said. “Cobenais’ story is just at the beginning, and the club staff and community
are excited to see what he will make of his future as he is a positive leader with
great potential. We are proud to have him represent Red Lake Nation Boys &
Girls Club”, concluded Graves.
If Cobenais wins at the state competition, he will compete for the title of the
Northwest Regional Youth of the Year and an additional $10,000 scholarship from
Tupperware Brands, the recognition program’s national sponsor. Five regional
winners will advance to Washington, D.C. in September 2011, to compete for the
title of BGCA’S National Youth of the Year. The National Youth of the Year will
receive an additional scholarship of up to $50,000 from The Rick and Susan
Goings Foundation and will have the opportunity to meet with President Obama at
the White House.
Darion lives with his grandparents, Nickel and Missy Cook.
