Experience will be the strength of Red Lake's
golf team
By Pat Miller
Bemidji Pioneer
Experience will be the strength of the Red Lake boys golf team as the Warriors
return their top six golfers from a year ago.
“Our chances should be better than last season because we did not lose anybody
and they all have another year under their belts,” said Red Lake coach Brad Castle.
“Our top six golfers have been participating since junior high and have a great deal
of experience.”
The group includes seniors Michael Kingbird, Marcus Grauman and Scott Lussier,
juniors Robert McNeal and Joe Perkins plus sophomore Corey Beaulieu.
“All six have a good chance to make the section meet in Bemidji,” Castle said.
“And I think Corey and Robert have good chances of making it to the state meet.”
Red Lake’s program also features more than 20 junior high golfers but the eighth,
ninth and 10th-grade classes are under-represented.
Improving your golf game is something that usually occurs over time but in 2010
the improvement of the Blackduck boys golfers was quick and dramatic.
“Last year we went from shooting in the mid-50s early in the season to the mid-40s
by season’s end,” said Drakes coach Jeremy Berg. “This year we hope to drop
those scores to the low-40s.
“If we do that I think we have a good shot at winning the conference championship
and doing well in the section.”
If the Drakes do challenge for post-season honors they will do so with a young
roster.
The lone senior on the squad is Trevor Johnson and he brings extended
experience which includes four years on the team.
Also back are sophomores Tanner Salmonson, Aaron Chaffin and Alex Erickson
as are freshman Stephan Johnson and eighth-grader Conor Gross.
Among the others who could challenge for varsity positions are sophomores Zach
Spangrud, Kelsey King, Tyler Gruber, Avery Kingbird and Al Nistler.
“If you are going to make the varsity you are going to have to play well,” Lundin
said.
Tyler Gabrelcik, Caleb Nelson and Tyler Marty are the lone seniors on the Bagley
boys golf team while the junior class is represented by Brenton Bergh, Chase
Netland and Trevor Willberg.
Andrew Larson, Brady Anderson, Brady Laudon, Ken Davis, Tony Berg and Trey
O’Bryan are the sophomores and Kameron Anderson and Zach Howard are the
freshmen.
