Iceman sentenced for assault
Thursday, April 14, in federal court in Fergus Falls, a 28-year-old Red Lake man
was sentenced for assaulting and strangling a woman on the Red Lake Indian
Reservation on March 4, 2010.
United States District Court Judge John R. Tunheim sentenced Ervin Allen Iceman
Jr. to three years of probation on one count of assault resulting in serious bodily
injury. In addition, Iceman will serve 10 months in a halfway house, in addition to
the four months already served. Iceman was indicted May 4, 2010, and pleaded
guilty June 24.
In his plea agreement, Iceman admitted that on March 4, 2010, he strangled the
woman and struck her in the face repeatedly with his fists. The woman suffered
extreme physical pain and lost a tooth. According to a law enforcement affidavit
filed in the case, the assault occurred after Iceman became upset with the victim
for asking people to leave his residence. That affidavit states that the request was
made around 3 a.m.
This case was the result of an investigation by the FBI and the Red Lake Tribal
Police Department. It was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney David P.
Steinkamp.
Because the Red Lake Indian Reservation is a federal-jurisdiction reservation,
some of the crimes that occur there are investigated by the FBI in conjunction with
the Red Lake Tribal Police Department. Those cases are prosecuted by the U.S.
Attorney’s Office.
