SWINOMISH CHAIRMAN CLADOOSBY IS GIVEN
THE AMERICAN INDIAN LEADERSHIP AWARD
Las Vegas, Nev.-When Brian Cladoosby was elected to the Swinomish Indian
Tribal Community Senate 26 years ago, the tribe was cutting back on employees'
hours to keep the office open.

"Our chairman, my predecessor Robert Joe Sr., turned back in his paycheck more
than once to keep our lights on," he said.

Cladoosby was speaking at RES 2011, the 25th Annual
Reservation Economic Summit & American Indian Business Trade Fair, where
last month he was given the American Indian Tribal Leaders Award for his
exceptional achievements.

Each year this award is given by the center to outstanding leadership in support of
American Indian business and economic development endeavors in tribal
communities. National Center of American Indian Enterprise Development
(NCAIED) honors those who have demonstrated leadership, dedication,
entrepreneurship, innovation, commitment, and success in areas of Indian
economic and business development

Economic development, starting with the Swinomish Indian Bingo in the 1983 and
then expanding to the Casino in 1994, has changed everything. Swinomish now
has nearly 900 members and an annual budget of nearly $70 million, making it a
leading employer in Northwest Washington state's Skagit County.

And Cladoosby, the Swinomish chairman for 16 years, has emerged as a
nationally distinguished Indian leader.

Cladoosby also serves as:

•        President of the Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians, an organization of 57
tribes in nine Western states
•        Chairman of the Association of Washington Tribes
•        Executive Board of the Washington State Indian Gaming Association
•        Execution Board for the National Congress of American Indian
•        Co-Speaker of the Coast Salish Gathering
•        Co-Chairman of the Northwest Climate Change Center
•        Caucus member of the Environmental Protection of the National Tribal
Operations Caucus

"I often share with up-and-coming leaders that having your people believe in you
and serving them is one of the most gratifying jobs in the world," stated
Cladoosby.  He said, "never think you can do it alone. In all of my experiences as a
tribal leader, a fisherman, a father, and a grandfather, I have come to the absolute
truth that is takes a team to succeed."

While organization such as the National Center for American Indian Enterprise
Development and the National Indian Gaming Association are leading economic
development in Indian Country, Cladoosby said tribal leaders must also help to
develop a climate in which business development is encouraged.

"First, what challenges can the tribal leaders of today and tomorrow expect, in light
of the fact that we are not only leaders in our tribal communities, but also captains
of some of the largest employers in our areas,"  he asked. "Second, how can we
work with the Congress to make the changes in our laws, regulations and policies
so we can break down the wall of barriers to help us provide prosperous and
sustainable economies?"

Swinomish is currently developing several projects for the betterment of its
community. A safe shelter for the tribe's women and children who are escaping
abuse is under construction. Also, the tribe is developing a new hotel and gas
station on the reservation.

This summer Swinomish will host Tribal Journeys, the annual canoe journey made
by tribes from as far as 1,000 miles to the north and south. More than 100 canoes
are expected to converge at Swinomish, where Cladoosby will be among those on
the shore waiting to welcome them.

The National Center for American Indian Enterprise Development was established
in 1969 and is the largest and oldest organization dedicated to building Native self-
sufficiency through business ownership. Based in Mesa, Ariz., the center hosts the
annual RES conference, the largest American Indian business conference in the U.
S., and it gives awards for distinguished American Indian leadership.
