The new RLNN set to launch first
week in May
By Michael Barrett
RLNN
The new and improved RLNN is scheduled to launch early next week, which
means a lot of changes will take place. The biggest change is that Red Lake Net
News, currently in its seventh year, will go back to the original www.rlnn.com,
instead of the current location, www.rlnn.us. The Web Site was forced to switch
crom .com to .us when the original site saw technical problems from outdated
software through its Yahoo Pagebuilder program, a program no longer supported.
The new RLNN.COM is costing me a little more than I had anticipated in the
beginning, but it is going to be a lot better than all the previous sites—and much
neater and cleaner and easier to navigate through. And we finally figured out a
way to keep the old sites for archive purposes, although accessible from different
servers.
Sections on the new RLNN will include NEWS, FEATURES, SPORTS,
OBITUARIES, POLITICS, OPINIONS, EVENTS, JOBS, CALENDAR,
CLASSIFIEDS and HUMOR—although I am still giving these topics much thought
and may add or modify them. At some point I may create subcategories also.
And I want to include more news and events from all Minnesota and surrounding
Native American communities.
It’s going to be a new experience for readers, one I’m certain they will appreciate—
no more scrolling down to find things on the events or employment sections, just to
name a couple of things. A reader will click on something and it should open right
up. The photo galleries will also be right on the site, rather than having to go to
another site to view them, and the ads are going to rotate and appear on other
pages in a neat and uniform manner. Videos will also be embedded right into the
site, and I will be looking at some mobile capabilities as well.
I will admit, I can hardly wait for it to launch. I even have a graphic artist working on
a new logo, and these software developers are saying the new site is going to give
RLNN a “big city” look, yet not too big as to overwhelm the main purpose—which
is to inform its readers of news and events and other information as quickly as they
become available.
These are just a few of the changes about to take place—I am currently learning
everything there is to know about the new software—and I am hoping to re-launch
RLNN.COM in the upcoming week. I may also be inviting those that write columns
or blogs to submit their materials—as well as anyone else or the readership to
submit their stories, photographs and videos (birthday parties, special events,
accomplishments, things happening in their communities, and more).
And finally, if you have any suggestions on what you would like to see on RLNN,
feel free to drop me a line at mbarrett@rlnn.com.
