Veterans Continue Service to Country through
Community Projects in Honor of the Joining
Forces Initiative
April 20, 2011 (Minneapolis, MN)— In honor of the First Lady’s recently announced
Joining Forces Initiative, The Mission Continues is mobilizing local veterans to
continue their lifelong commitment to national service by leading a service project
in the community. Joining Forces aims to create an atmosphere of ‘shared
service’ and a WWII sense of ‘all give some’ by encouraging Americans to
perform service in honor of military families and veterans. When veterans are
given opportunities to serve locally alongside civilians, civilians benefit from
veteran leadership and veterans benefit from a renewed sense of purpose.
A team of veteran and civilian Mission Continues volunteers will complete a
service project at the Lost Valley Scientific and Natural Area. Volunteers will work
on removing non-native plant species throughout the park on Wednesday, April 27
from 8:30 a.m. until 12:00 p.m.
The Mission Continues, an award-winning national nonprofit organization,
engages veterans to lead service projects in our communities, mobilizing them as
one of our nation’s greatest assets. The organization equally encourages civilians
to serve alongside veterans, supporting their efforts and showing gratitude for their
sacrifices.
“We are pleased to participate in this annual campaign by mobilizing some of
America’s most dedicated citizens, our veterans, to volunteer in their
communities,” said Chris Martinez, Director of Volunteer Outreach for The Mission
Continues. “These veterans serve as key role models, demonstrating leadership
and civic responsibility to the civilians who serve alongside them. Working
together, veterans and civilians can and will reshape a nation.”
In addition to facilitating service projects across the country, The Mission
Continues awards fellowships to post-9/11 wounded and disabled veterans to
continue their service in their communities. The Fellowship Program enables
veterans to spend 14 to 28 weeks at a service organization in a capacity that
matches their skills with the organization’s needs.
