Alvin D. Staples, (Madaabe – Coming out of the water), 90 of Cass Lake, MN
died Friday, June 11, 2010 at his home.
Funeral Services will be 10:00 am, Thursday, June 17, 2010 at the Veteran’s
Memorial Building in Cass Lake, MN. A wake will begin at 4:00 pm on
Wednesday, June 16, 2010 and go until the time of service on Thursday.
Interment will be at the Thompson Cemetery in Cass Lake, MN under the
direction of the Cease Family Funeral Home of Bemidji.
He was born October 31, 1919 in Mission, MN the son of John F. and Sophie
(Bellecourt) Staples. He attended various schools. While attending Haskell
Institute in Lawrence, KS he was drafted into the US Army and served from
1942-1946. He married Emily Thompson June 24, 1947. They raised seven
children sharing a relationship of unconditional love which they showered on
their children. He was a heavy equipment operator for the BIA for over 26
years. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, hunting, ricing and watching the Twins. He
loved going to powwows. One of his biggest joys was his grandchildren and
holding babies; he helped babysit his great grandchildren right up until his
death. He loved his weekly family dinners for the past 4 1/2 years at his home.
He is survived by 5 children: Patrick (Debbie) Staples of New Town, ND, Judy
Harper of Cass Lake, MN, Liz Aitken of Bemidji, MN, Kay (Douglas) Jackson
of Bemidji, MN, Becky (Mike) Olson of Eden Prairie, MN; Special
granddaughter Molly Gross, 22 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren, 12
great great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews
He was preceded in death by his wife, daughter Melvena “Heb” Church, son
Alan Gross, grandson Michael Staples, 6 brothers and 2 sisters.
Honorary Casketbearers will be granddaughters Emily Staples, Molly Gross,
Melanie Harper, Michele Fredrickson, Laurie Harper, Missy Gregerson, Nina
Aitken, Alana Gross, Leslie Harper, Becky Overlie, Nissa Peltier, Ashley
Staples, Emily Olson, Patty Church, and Deborah White Owl.
Active Casketbearers will be grandsons Pat Alvin Staples, Jeff Harper, Alan
Punky Gross, Dan Staples, Eric Jackson, Kyle Staples, Michael White Owl
and great grandsons Darren Harper and Danny Fredrickson.
