Carmella “Car” Jean Raincloud, whose Ojibwe name is Ogimaabinesiik, which
means “Head Thunderbird Woman” of the Bear Clan, 69, of Ponemah died Friday,
Nov. 26, at the Red Lake PHS Indian Hospital in Red Lake.
The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 30, at the Ponemah
Community Center in Ponemah, with spiritual leader Greg Kingbird. A wake will
begin at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Ponemah Community Center and will continue
until the time of the services Tuesday. Burial will be at the Family Burial Grounds in
Ponemah under the direction of the Cease Family Funeral Home of Blackduck.
Pallbearers will be Ronald Patterson, Harlan Stillday, Michael Stillday, Gerry
Kingbird, Leon Kingbird and Bruce Taylor.
Honorary pallbearers will be all the staff of the Jourdain-Perpich Extended Care
Center.
She was born Sept. 14, 1941, to Clarence and Sybil (Daisey) Stillday Sr. in
Ponemah. She was raised and educated in Ponemah and graduated from Red
Lake High School. She married Daniel Raincloud Jr. Feb. 11, 1960, in Ponemah.
They made their home in Ponemah. She was an artist who was good at drawing,
playing guitar, flute, harmonica and violin. She was a good cook and like to do
puzzle books and go to the casino. She loved to spend time with her family
especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughters, Roberta “Robbie” Raincloud of Ponemah and
Dawn Raincloud of Duluth; sons, Harold (Belva) Raincloud of Ponemah, Daryl
(Carol) Raincloud of Ponemah, Arlen Raincloud of Bemidji and Robert Raincloud
of Ponemah; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; sister, Violet Patterson of
Ponemah; brother, Eugene (Alfreda) Stillday of Ponemah; and numerous nieces,
nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 1992; brothers, George,
Clarence Jr. and Leon Hicks; and sister- Josephine.
