SAN JUAN - Duane Benjamin Beck, 80, died Monday, May 24, 2010. He was
born to the late James B. Beck and late Luella Andrea (Toby) Beck on
January 26, 1930 in Bowbells, N.D.
He was a graduate of the University of North Dakota and taught business at
Red Lake Indian Reservation School in Red Lake, MN for over 30 years until
he retired. He was a well respected teacher and committed his entire
professional career to teaching in Red Lake. Duane and his family lived in
Puposky, MN. He and his wife Pauline had four boys and one girl. The children
were greatly encouraged and given many opportunities to participate in
sports. Many weekends were spent driving to hockey or baseball
tournaments, and Duane was committed to making every sacrifice so his
children had every opportunity to participate in sports and after school
functions. Duane started the first and only youth baseball program in Nebish
which provided opportunities for many rural kids to play in an organized
baseball league. Duane would teach summer school and help Paulie manage
the Blackduck golf course so his children could afford skates, sticks and figure
skating lessons. Teaching his children to golf was one of his many goals in life.
In 1986 he moved to Donna, TX where he met and married his wife, Betty. His
hobbies were golf, dancing with his bride and playing cards with his many
friends. Duane was very energized by his acquired granddaughter Elizabeth.
They spent many hours in the “old folks” swimming pool. Duane was very
happy to be included in the Zaedow family. His last years were spent being
very lovingly cared for by Betty and her daughters Carla and PJ with
assistance from Rodney and granddaughter Elizabeth. No amount of thanks
can express how appreciative the Beck family is to the Zaedow family for the
loving kindness they shared with Duane.
He was preceded in death by his son Jon (Joby) Beck (15) his brother David
and parents.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 24 years, Betty (Zaedow)
Beck; his children, Randy & Rod of MN, Keith Beck & Paula Buckley of MT,
Rod Zaedow, P.J. Jarzombek & Carla Zaedow of TX; a sister, Beatrice
Simpson of VA, nieces Jane and Andrea; 11 grandchildren; 3 great-
grandchildren & 2 nieces.
A memorial service will be held at 4 pm on Saturday, June 26, 2010 at
Pleasant Valley Church in Puposky. The families are honoring Duane’s
wishes that he be cremated and his ashes spread with his youngest son Joby.
