Frederick Jack Fairbanks, whose name is Gay-Gug-Ee-Gwuni-Binays, which
means Spotted Thunderbird, 50, died Tuesday, June 8, at North Country
Regional Hospital in Bemidji.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 12, at the Facility
Center in Cass Lake with Spiritual Leaders Kippy Wilson and Allen Hardy
officiating. A wake will continue at the Facility Center in Cass Lake until the
time of the service. Burial will be in the Porcupine Lane Cemetery in Cass
Lake, following the service.
Services were made with the Northern Peace Funeral Home of Walker.
The pallbearers will be Joe Fairbanks, Travis Oxtra, Jack Jr., Brent Dahl,
Terrance Davenport, Leslie “Mikey” Hoekman and Devin Wells.
Honorary pallbearers will be Maudy Rodriguez, Dana Sargent, Pete Jones,
Jay Brown, and Maynard Raisch, his brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews.
He was born May 30, 1960, to Jack Fairbanks and Mary Jane Folstrom of
White Earth, Minn., in Cass Lake. He was raised by his parents in their Lake
George home until their deaths. He was then raised by his adoptive parents
George and Shirley Klaus of Rochester, Minn. He attended grade school at
St. John's Catholic School and continued his education through the 11th grade
at Lourdes Catholic High School before moving to Iron Mountain, Mich., at the
age of 17, to work in the wood product industry. He eventually moved back to
Minnesota and fell in love with Carolyn Oxtra. They started a family and had
three sons together before her death on Dec. 17, 1999. He worked at several
jobs throughout his lifetime including forestry in Cass Lake and Core Craft in
Bemidji. He enjoyed spending time out in the woods, collecting birch bark and
red willow to make various traditional pieces of art. His art included birch bark
canoes, frames, wood-burned pine rocking chairs and diamond willow
walking sticks. He enjoyed spending time with his friends and family,
especially with his boys and his nieces and nephews. He liked to tell stories
about his treks through the United States.
He is survived by his sons, Joe (Sherry) Fairbanks and Travis (Tara) Oxtra
both of Bemidji; sisters, Jeannie (Ed) Lemay of LaCrosse, Wis., Karen
Fairbanks of White Earth, Minn. and Liz (Gary) Pierce and Missy Murray both
of Walla Walla, Wash.; brother, Will Klaus of Guthrie; two grandsons; seven
nieces; 10 nephews and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandfather, Simon Folstrom; life
partner, Carolyn Oxtra; son, Jesse; and sisters. Denise Dahl and Shirley
Adams.
