Gary James Smith Jr., 33, of Bemidji, died Monday, Oct. 4, 2010, in Mahnomen.
The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, at the Little Rock Community
Center in Red Lake, with Spiritual Leader Greg Kingbird officiating. The wake will
begin at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, at the Little Rock Center and will continue until the
time of the services on Saturday. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in
Red Lake, under the direction of the Cease Family Funeral Home of Bemidji.
Pallbearers will be Randy Benais, Terry Benais, Damian Smith, Leland Smith Sr.,
Derrick Smith, Ralph Cloud Jr., with alternates as, Alan Lajeunesse Sr. and
Matthew Beaulieu.
Honorary pallbearers will be Peter Benais, Albert Benais Jr., Bob Benais,
Georgianna Beaulieu, Arlene Beaulieu, Myron Benais and Ernest Steel.
He was born Oct. 11, 1976, to Gary Sr. and Marian (Benais) Smith, in Red Lake.
He was raised and educated in Red Lake and Redby. He attended schools in
Wahpeton and Red Lake Tribal College. In 1998, he received a certificate in
Heavy Equipment. In 2000, he moved to Eveleth, Minn., and took welding courses
at Eveleth Community College. He married Michelle Lee Schuster on Feb. 23,
2001, in Red Lake. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in March of 2001 and was later
medically discharged. They moved back to Bemidji. He recently received a
degree in carpentry from Northwest Technical College. For the last month, he was
working at Crystal Sugar in Crookston, Minn.
He enjoyed fishing, working on cars, working on car stereos, building things and
spending time with his friends and family. He enjoyed joking around and had a
funny sense of humor.
He is survived by his wife, of Bemidji; children, Lakota Beaulieu, of Red Lake,
Marcus Smith, of Bemidji, Jalen Smith, of Bemidji; sister, Cheryl (LeRoy) Smith, of
Redby; brother, Conrad (Mavis) Smith, of Crookston; grandmother, Josephine
Benias, of Red Lake; numerous aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins.
