Howard “H. Tom” Thomas White Sr., 75 of Cass Lake, died Tuesday, May 18,
2010, at North Country Regional Hospital in Bemidji.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 22, at the Veteran’s
Memorial Building in Cass Lake with the Rev. Anthony Peterson officiating. A
wake will begin at 5 p.m. Friday, May 21, at the Veteran’s Memorial Building
in Cass Lake and continue until the time of the service. There will be a
celebration service at 7 p.m. Friday, May 21, at the Veteran’s Memorial
Building.
The Cease Family Funeral Home of Bemidji assisted the family with
arrangements.
The pallbearers will be his grandsons, Clint White, Brandon Beaulieu, Adam
White, John White, Scott White and Zach White with alternates Ralph White
and Nick White.
He was born Dec. 28, 1934, to John Jacob and Lilly (West) White in Onigum,
Minn. He graduated from Bemidji State University with a degree in Indian
studies and chemical dependency. After the service he started a family with
and married Clarice Day White. He worked various jobs in Minneapolis and
worked as a liaison for Indian Students with the Minneapolis School District
for many years. In the summer of 1974, he moved back to the Leech Lake
Reservation and worked as an advocate in social services for the tribe. He
was fluent in Ojibwe and taught in several schools. He was an avid sports fan
and enjoyed all sports. He coached men’s and women’s softball and
basketball and he played men’s softball and basketball. He was an active part
of youth sports. He was a traditional dancer and drummer. He was a
recovering alcoholic and had been sober for more than 30 years. He also had
a strong faith in Jesus Christ. He enjoyed ricing, horses and sugar camp. He
was a fond lover of German Shepherds.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Joyce White; children, Howard White
Jr., Rodney White, Mary (Philip) Flocken, Russell “Beaver” (Emily) White and
Barbara White; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; youngest son, Ralph; brothers;
sisters; nieces and nephews.
