Josephine Harrison Dunn, whose Ojibwe name is GiiWiiTay’aashiikwe, which means “Twirling Wind Woman,” 77, of Cass Lake, died Friday, Feb. 5, 2010, at her home.
Traditional funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Feb 9, at the Veteran’s Memorial Building in Cass Lake with Spiritual Leader Lee Staples. A wake began Saturday evening Feb. 6, and will continue until the time of the service Tuesday. Burial will be in the Morgan Cemetery in Cass Lake under the direction of the Cease Family Funeral Home of Cass Lake.
Active pallbearers will be: Kyle Skenandore, Dennis Harrison, Kyle Dunn, Shane Dunn, Elden Gooden Dunn, and Gordon Harrison.
Honorary pallbearers will be all of her numerous friends.
She was born Oct. 28, 1932, to Amos and Daisy (Blaine) Woods at Oak Point, Minn. She lived in the Leech Lake area for 77 years. She attended the Mann School in Oak Point. She went on to work at CHR Health Division from 1969-1996, and then with the Bug-O-Nay-Ge-Shig School as an Ojibwe language interpreter for the NiiGaane program from 2007-2009. She married Richard John Dunn in 1962, and they were together until he died March 11, 2000. She loved playing bingo, sewing quilts and socializing with friends. She made some of the finest fry bread at powwows.
She is survived by her daughters, Irene Harrison, Deb (David) Fairbanks, Mona (Kyle) Dunn and Cheryl (Rowa) Dunn; son, Erni (Val) Dunn; brother, Henry (Veda) Harrison; special granddaughter she raised, Raeanne Dunn; and a namesake granddaughter, Kaylani-Amarie Hanson; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brother, Frank Woods.
