Joyce Marie Snowdon, whose Ojibwe name is Migizikwe, which means “Eagle Woman,” 68, of Bemidji, died on Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2010, at her home in Bemidji.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24, at Fiddler’s Hall in Belcourt, N. D. A wake will begin Tuesday evening, Feb. 23, at the Fiddler’s Hall and will continue until the time of the services. Burial will be in St. Anne’s Catholic Cemetery in Belcourt in the spring.
Pallbearers will be Chris Martell, Cory Martell, Jr., Brandon Martell, Aaron Martell, Blaine Martell, Jr., and Derres Martell.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Sherman Martell, George Trottier, Burton Trottier, John Trottier, Bill McGraw, Robert Trollier, Dickie Trottier, Glen Trottier, Joe Martell, Jared Martell, Garrett Dietman and Nick Jones.
The Cease Family Funeral Home of Bemidji helped the family with arrangements.
She was born March 19, 1941, to Agnes (Wheeler) and Patrick Trottier of Belcourt. She attended school in Belcourt and moved with her family to St. Cloud where she graduated from Cathedral High School.
She worked at the Gilfillan Center and Sprucewoods in Bemidji. She also was a child care worker for several years. She enjoyed raising her grandchildren, watching movies, dancing and listening to music. She received the Mother of the Year Award in Bemidji.
She is survived by her birth mother, of Rolla, N.D.; father who raised her, Peter Helmin; sons, Clifford Martell, Jr., Cory Martell, Blaine Martell, Jaimie Snowdon, Ozzie Snowdon, Royce Snowdon, Deran Hill, Bobby Brummit and Larry Durheim; daughter, Peggy Martell; stepson, Chris Snowdon; stepdaughter Shelly Snowdon; and 46 grandchildren 34 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her mother who raised her, Emma Helmin; birth father; daughter, Sharlene Martell; son, T. J. Shabiash; and sisters, Sylvia and Joan.
