Katherine “Honey” Goodwin, 69, of Mahnomen, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 2010, at
her home under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

The funeral was held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 4, at St. Anne’s Catholic Church,
Naytahwaush, with the Rev. Dwight Hoeberechts and the Rev. Jerry Orsino
officiating. Visitation was held at 5-9 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 3, with a prayer service at
7 p.m. at St. Anne’s Catholic Church. Burial was in Samuel Memorial Episcopal
Cemetery, Naytahwaush. Arrangements were entrusted to Anderson-Mattson
Funeral home, Mahnomen.

Pallbearers were her nephews, Patrick Goodwin, Vernon Bishop, Vincent Olson,
Robert Goodwin Jr., Floyd Person and Kevin Hedstrom.

Honorary pallbearers were Mark Boswell, Mike Goodwin, Keith Bishop, Jeff
LaVoy, Dennis Fitzgerald, Christopher McDougall, Frank Johnson Jr. and Deanna
and Arnold Rasmussen.

She was born Aug. 8, 1941, to Leonard Sr. and Katherine (Morgan) McDougall, in
White Earth. She grew up in Naytahwaush where she attended grade school. She
graduated from Mahnomen High School and attended Haskell Institute where she
earned a business degree. She worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Bemidji.
She married George V. Goodwin Jr. on Sept. 7, 1963, at St. Anne’s Catholic
Church in Naytahwaush. She worked for several federal government agencies for
more than 35 years. She worked primarily in Indian Health Services but also
worked for the Food and Drug Administration and the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
Over the years, George’s employment took the family to different parts of the
country. They spent time in Bemidji, White Earth, Cass Lake, Minneapolis,
Arlington, Va. And Falls Church, Va. Their love for the family, friends and the state
brought them back to Minnesota. She retired from Indian Health Services in 2005
but she continued to work at the Mahnomen Child Care Learning Center until the
time of her death. Family was the first priority for her and she enjoyed being a part
of her children’s and grandchildren’s lives as she enjoyed watching them and
admiring them. She also enjoyed the time she spent with her two special friends.

She is survived by a son, James Goodwin, of Fargo, N.D.; a daughter, Dana
(Dennis Williams) Goodwin, of Mahnomen; four grandchildren; siblings, Leonard
(Jeanne) McDougall Jr., of Naytahwaush, Janice (Marcell) Goodwin, of Bagley,
Norma FitzGeral, of Monroeville, Pa., Maxine (Paul) Boswell, of Waubun, Gloria
(Clinton) Goodwin, of Bagley, Earl (Eileen) McDougall, of Naytahwaush, Suzanne
(Dean) Bishop, of Waubun; an aunt; and two special friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a sister; and a brother.
