Leonard Fabian Spears Sr., whose Ojibwe name is “Gabede-wiidang,” which
means “Someone Hollering,” 82, of Red Lake, died Sunday, May 30, 2010, at
Jourdain/Perpich Extended care Facility in Red Lake.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, June 4, at the St. Mary’s
Catholic Church in Red Lake with the Rev. Pat Sullivan officiating. A wake will
begin Thursday, June 3, at the Sah Kay Tay (LittleRock) Center in Red Lake
and will continue until the time of service on Friday. Burial will be in St. Mary’s
Mission Catholic Church Cemetery in Red Lake under the direction of the
Cease Family Funeral Home of Bemidji. Military Honors will be by the Red
Lake VFW Post.
The pallbearers will be his grandsons, Christopher Jourdain, Miskwasin
Spears, Jeremy Spears, Shaundae White, Ira Spears and Selam Spears.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Red Lake Singers.
He was born Dec. 20, 1928, to Robert and Nellie (Strong) Spears in Red
Lake. He attended St. Mary’s Mission School in Red Lake. He graduated in
1948, from St. Paul’s High School in Marty, S.D. He enlisted in the U.S. Army
and served from 1948-1954, service most of his tour in Germany. When he
was discharged, he worked at Thermal King and Whirlpool. He retired in 2000
and returned to the Red Lake Nation to live. He was Hereditary Chief when his
father, Robert Spears, decided it was time for him to sit on the Tribal Council.
He in turn passed this down to his eldest son. He spoke Ojibwe fluently, knew
all the old songs and was a grass dancer. He loved to participate in high
school sports and later on became an avid spectator. He attended the Marty,
S.D. School Reunion every year until he was unable to travel.
He is survived by his children, Gerald, Darilyn, Cherilyn, Leonard Jr., Joann
Spears and Anthony Nichols; brothers, James (Maria) Spears and William
(Ruth) Spears; sisters, Frances Pell, Alberta Jackson, Charlotte (Bill) Monette
and Roberta Boyd.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Mary Rutherford and Juleen
“Jinx” Needham and infant brothers, Robert Joseph and Robert Michael
Spears.
