Louis “Giinice” Clarence Kingbird, Sr., 77, of Ponemah, whose Indian name is
“Giinew” which means Eagle, died on Friday, August 20, 2010 at the Sanford
Health Center in Fargo, North Dakota.

Traditional Indian Services will be held at 12:00 P.M. on Thursday, August 26,
2010 at the Ponemah Community Center in Ponemah, Minnesota with
Spiritual Leader Steven Jackson. A wake will begin at 3 P.M. on Tuesday,
August 24 at the Ponemah Community Center and will continue until the time
of services there.  Burial will be in the Family Burial Grounds in Ponemah,
Minnesota.  Arrangements are assisted by Cease Funeral Home, Blackduck,
MN.

Active Pallbearers will be Nicholas “Nick” Johnson, Oriole “Orie, Jr.” Johnson,
Andrew “A-Jay” French, Darris Kingbird, Dustin Stillday, Trevor Kingbird,
Randall “Dino” Jones, and Richard “Opie” Defoe, Jr. with alternates Anthony
Morrison, Matthew “Mat” Morrison, Gideon Hardy, and Meredeth Kingbird.

Honorary Pallbearers will be all his friends and family.

He was born on October 13, 1932 in Ponemah, the son of NiiGabow and
Louise (Gurneau) Kingbird.  He attended school in Ponemah and Red Lake.  
He married Elizabeth Edith Baptiste on December 24, 1957 in Ponemah.  He
was a lifelong resident of Ponemah and worked at several jobs.  He worked
for the Red Lake School District as a bus driver, at the Ponemah Post Office
as a postal clerk, as a BIA police officer at Red Lake, as a logger, as a
commercial fisherman on Red Lake, as an ambulance driver for Ponemah
Ambulance, as a truck driver for Red Lake Mills in Redby and as a Foster
Parent to 16 children.  He retired in 1993 due to health reasons.  He enjoyed
making Indian Customs for his children and other people.  He carefully made
beautiful beadwork which everybody loved.  He also liked going to casinos
and Pow-Wows.  He enjoyed watching the Twins and Vikings play.  He loved
to spend time visiting with friends and family, especially with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Elizabeth Kingbird of Ponemah; his 2
sons, Louis (Roberta) Kingbird, Jr. and Oriole Kingbird, both of Ponemah; his
2 daughters, Williamette Hardy Morrison and Maxine Hardy, both of Ponemah;
26 grandchildren; 54 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; his
sister Agnes Hardy of Ponemah; his 2 adopted brothers, Peter Thomas, Jr.
and Richard Thomas, both of Ponemah; his adopted sister, Beverly Thomas
of Ponemah; and 15 foster children.

He is preceded in death by his parents; 2 sisters; a daughter, Lucina
Oakgrove; a granddaughter, Delma Hardy; a grandson, Lavan Stillday; an
adopted sister, Judith Spears; and 1 foster child.
