Norman “Doe” Robert Spears, 69, of Ponemah, MN, whose Indian name was
Gizhemanidoo which means “Head of the Spirits”, died of lung cancer on
Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at Sanford Health in Fargo, North Dakota.  
Traditional Indian Services will be held at 10:00 AM on  Monday, September
13, 2010 in the Ponemah Community Center with Spiritual Leader Steve
Jackson officiating. A wake will begin Saturday afternoon, September 11,
2010 at the Ponemah Community Center and will continue until the time of the
service.  Interment will be in the Family Burial Grounds in Ponemah,
Minnesota.  Cease Family Funeral Home of Blackduck assisted the family
with arrangements.

Active pallbearers will be Greeting “Ole” Spears, Alvin Johnson, Mike Spears,
Arlan Johnson, Derek Spears, Preston Spears, Sr., Melvin “Sammy” Johnson
and David Jones, Jr.

Honorary pallbearers will be Robert Kingbird, David Clark, Daniel Johnson,
Gary Nelson, Sr., Stanley Jones, Tyler Johnson, Sydney Johnson, Angel
Stillday, Edwin Jones and all his friends and relatives.

He was born June 15, 1941 in Ponemah to Greeting Spears and Maude
(Wind) Spears. He attended school in Red Lake and Ponemah. He attended
Vo-Tech for truck driving in East Grand Forks, and then worked driving truck
for various companies there. He also worked as an EMT for the Ponemah
Ambulance, a Red Lake Casino shuttle driver for the Seven Clans Casino in
Thief River Falls, was a commercial fisherman on Red Lake and drove a truck
for Rudy Johnson Logging in Ponemah.  He retired as a truck driver.
He enjoyed fishing, working on cars, being a carpenter and especially loved
being with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his companion of 43 years, Roseadelle Johnson of
Ponemah; a daughter, Tina (Edwin Jones) Johnson of Ponemah; stepchildren,
Robert “Earl” (LuAnn) Fairbanks of Ponemah; Bradley (Vicky) Johnson, Sr. of
Ponemah; Phyllis Johnson of Minneapolis; Glendoris (Larry) Johnson-Roy of
Ponemah; Winona Johnson of Bemidji; Rebecca Johnson of Red Lake and
Julie A. Johnson of Duluth; four grandchildren, Stanley Jones, Sydney
Johnson, Tyler Johnson, and Angel Stillday, all of Ponemah; 22 step-
grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, Justina Owens and Felixs Owens,
both of Ponemah; 28 step-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Greeting “Gus”
Spears and Gordon Spears, both of Ponemah; two sisters, Eliza Johnson and
Doris Strong, both of Ponemah; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Greeting and Maude Spears; two
brothers, Alex Spears and Alvin Spears; sisters, Gloria Spears-Jones and
twin sisters, Armella Spears and Carmella Spears; his great-grandfathers,
Tom Spears and Nodin Wind and his great-grandmother, O-Gitchi-daa-quay.
