Otto W. Eckman, 73, of Debs, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 2010, at North Country
Regional Hospital in Bemidji.

There will be no services at this time. Cease Family Funeral Home of Bemidji
assisted the family with arrangements.

He was born July 20, 1937, to Otto and Anne (Bagel) Eckman of Milwaukee. He
married Sandra Thayer in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, in 1958. He received his bachelor’
s degree from Whitworth College in Spokane, Wash., in 1959. He taught fifth and
sixth grade in Los Angeles area schools. He moved back to the Milwaukee area
and taught fifth grade in a Wauwatosa, Wis., public school. He received his master’
s degree in research and statistics from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
He was a principal at East Dubuque, Ill., public schools. He earned his doctorate in
education evaluation from Florida State University in Tallahassee, Fla.. He was a
professor of elementary teacher education at Hastings College in Hastings, Neb.
He was an evaluator of College Teacher Education Programs for Accreditation for
the Illinois Department of Education in Springfield, Ill.

They moved to the Debs area in 1976 to raise cattle, hogs and chickens. He was
the director of the alternative school on the Red Lake Reservation. He was
supervisor of group homes for cognitively delayed adults at Polk County Group
Homes in Crookston.

He retired to enjoy his family, traveling, fishing and hunting.

He is survived by his wife; son, Gregg (Kristi) of Grand Forks, N.D.; daughter,
Alyssa (Kelda Golden) of Lexington, Ky.; sister, Barbara (Eugene) Fadel of Eau
Claire, Mich., and nieces and nephews
