Peter Smith Jr., 48, of Fridley, Minn., formerly of Red Lake, died Friday, Dec. 17,
2010, at the Edina Dialysis Center in Edina, Minn.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 21, at the Red Lake Community
Center in Red Lake with the Rev. George Ross officiating. A wake will begin at 11
a.m. Monday, Dec. 20, at the Red Lake Community Center and will continue until
the funeral. Burial will be in the family burial grounds in Red Lake under the
direction of Cease Family Funeral Home of Bemidji.
He was born Oct. 7, 1962, to Peter Smith Sr. and Verna Mae Morgan in
Minneapolis. He was raised in Minneapolis until his mother died in 1976. He,
along with his brothers and sisters moved in with his aunt and uncle in Red Lake,
where he continued his education. After high school, he attended the University of
Minnesota-Duluth, and the University of Minnesota in the Twin Cities, working
toward a degree in law. He was always an excellent student, often on the Dean’s
list, and with honors. He was a gifted public speaker as well. In his younger years,
he worked a variety of jobs including as a fisherman, trapper, logger and short
order cook. He had kidney disease since a young age, including undergoing a
kidney transplant at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and golf and had a big sense of humor. He was quick-
witted and enjoyed playing practical jokes.
He is survived by brothers, Shannon “Opie” (Laura) Barron of Red Lake and Verto
(Lena) Barron Jr. of Plummer, Minn.; sisters, Holly (Ray Geshick) Smith of Ely,
Minn.; Maryanne Morgan of Red Lake, Theresa King of Minneapolis and Lorraine
King of Warroad, Minn.; special brother, Paul LaChapelle of Minneapolis; and his
aunt who raised him, Rosie Morgan of Red Lake,
He was preceded in death by his parents, two grandparents; brother, Earl G.
Morgan; a nephew, Vincent Smith Sr.; and his adopted father, Gerald “Butch” Brun.
