Rhonda Susan Graves, whose Ojibwe name is “Benasii Equay,” which means
“Thunderbird Woman,” 60, of Red Lake, died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2010, at St.
Mary’s Essentia Health Hospital in Detroit Lake, Minn.
A Traditional Funeral Service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 22, at the
Redby Community Center in Redby. A wake will begin in the morning of Saturday
at the Redby Community Center in Redby and will continue until the time of the
service on Monday. Burial will be in Fox Point Cemetery in Redby, under the
direction of the Cease Family Funeral Home of Bemidji.
Pallbearers will be Donnie Spears, Darwin Sumner, Gary Thunder, Guy Stately,
Tyrone Thunder and Joe Bay Strong.
Honorary pallbearers will be Carol Quinn, Jeanne Thunder, Phyllis Thunder, June
Atkinson, Brenda Smith and Ada Carlson.
She was born on July 17, 1950, to David Staples and Doris Graves Carlson, in
Red Lake. She was raised and educated in Red Lake. She worked at the Red
Lake School and then worked at Social Services in Red Lake. She worked at the
Redby Store for several years. She moved to the Detroit Lakes area and worked
for the White Earth Indian Center and later became a Personal Care Attendant at
a Detroit Lakes Adult Assisted Living facility until her health declined. She enjoyed
quilting, reading, playing Bingo at the casino, attending powwows and was a
spiritual woman with the Midewin Society. She helped many people in different
areas throughout the Indian communities.
She is survived by sisters, Mary Lou Carlson, OSB of St. Joseph, Minn., Cindy
Carlson, of Redby, Pearl Carlson, of Redby; brothers, Carl Carlson Jr., of Redby,
Wayne Carlson, of Redby; and a special sister, Carol Quinn, of Detroit Lakes.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
