Roberta Mary “Darling” McKenzie, 81, of Redby, whose Ojibwe name is “She-Sha-
Ga-Shek,” died Thursday, Nov. 11, 2010, at the Sanford Hospital in Fargo, N.D.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 15, at the St. Mary’s Mission
Catholic Church in Red Lake, with the Rev. Jerry Rogers officiating. The wake will
begin at 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, at the Red Lake Community Center and will
continue until the time of the service. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Catholic
Cemetery in Red Lake, under the direction of the Cease Family Funeral Home of
Bemidji.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Robert Beaulieu Jr., Christopher Jourdain Sr.,
Miskwasin Spears, Jeremy Spears, John Cobenais Jr. and Austin Head.

She was born on Nov. 28, 1928, to Selam and Eliza (Berrard) Head, in Red Lake.
She attended school in Redby, boarding school at Haskell in Lawrence, Kan., and
returned to graduate in 1947 from Red Lake High School. She attended a year of
business school in Bemidji and worked as a secretary at the University of
Minnesota in the Department of Medical Laboratories for 8 years. She was the
first Native American woman to win the Governor’s award for secretary of the year.
She returned to Red Lake and worked for the high school, for the BIA for 11 years,
at the HIS hospital for 10 years and later for the Department of Natural Resources.
She attended and graduated from the Red Lake Nation College with an AA
degree, as their oldest graduate.

She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, going to the casino and spending time with her
family. She also enjoyed sitting and visiting with her friends at the ENP.

She is survived by her children, Gerald Spears, of Redby, Darilyn Spears, of
Redby, Cherilyn Spears, of Redby, Ronald McKenzie, of Redby, Roderick
McKenzie, of Redby; brother, Ronald Head , of Minneapolis; sister, Betty Beaulieu,
of Redby; special grandchildren whom she raised, Jeremy Spears, Liza Spears
and Rose McKenzie; 20 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-
great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Clem McKenzie; daughter,
Marilyn Beaulieu; brother, Robert Head Sr.; four infant siblings; and a great-
granddaughter.
