Royce Donald “Makadewiigaabo” Wilson, 61, of Ponemah, whose Indian name
means Black Standing, died Monday, Nov. 8, 2010, at his home in Ponemah.
The traditional Indian service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, at the
Ponemah Community Center. Visitation will begin on Thursday, Nov. 11, at the
Ponemah Community Center and continue until the funeral. Burial will be in the
family burial grounds in Ponemah. The Cease Family Funeral Home of Blackduck
assisted the family with arrangements.
Pallbearers will be Leonard King, Clarence Clark Jr., Jason Nelson, Alvin
Johnson, Stephen Cloud and Darcy Benais Sr., with alternates Steven Thunder
and Arlan Johnson.
Honorary pallbearers will be Garrett Nelson, Herbert Nelson Jr., Earl and Marty
Raincloud, Marcel Johnson Jr. and Gordon Spears.
He was born on Jan. 5, 1949, to Milford Burke Sr. and Lorena (Wilson) Raincloud,
into the Kingfisher Clan in Red Lake. He attended schools in Red Lake and was
raised in Ponemah. He joined the U.S. Navy and served during the Vietnam War.
He worked for many years as a logger, a commercial fisherman on Red Lake and
as an automobile mechanic. He lived in Ponemah for all of his life.
He enjoyed spending time at the Casino, spending time with his friends and family,
his three dogs, ice fishing and working on cars.
He is survived by his sisters, Connie Raincloud of Ponemah, Charlotte (Clarence)
Clark, of Redby; brothers, Earl (Aucia) Raincloud, of Ponemah, Martin (Dena)
Raincloud, of Ponemah; adopted daughter, LaRayne “Kim” (Mitchell) Kingbird, of
Red Lake; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Delano Wilson, Douglas
Raincloud, Dennis Burke, Melvin Burke, Robert Burke, Melford Burke Jr.; sisters,
Marlene Nelson, Rosalie Burke, Joyce Burke, Phyllis Burke; and special
companion, Ruth Johnson.
