Samuel J. Rock, 74, of Waubun, died Friday, July 16, 2010, at his home.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 20, at St. Columba Episcopal Church in
White Earth with the Rev. Lisa Smith, Rev. Carol “Coke” Smith, Rev. George Ross
and Rev. John Rock officiating. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, in the
Breck Memorial Episcopal Cemetery in Ponsford.
The David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes is assisting with
arrangements.
He was born Sept. 8, 1935, in Pine Point Township in Ponsford to Reuben and
Anna (White) Rock. He was raised and educated in Ponsford and in Park Rapids,
graduating from Park Rapids High School in 1955. He received his Bachelor’s
Degree from Metro State University in St. Paul and in 1998 was named the Metro
State Outstanding Alumni. He earned his Master’s Degree from the University of
Minnesota-Duluth in 2006.
He was united in marriage to Janis French April 27, 1958, in Ponsford. They made
their home in St. Paul where he worked for the Minnesota Department of
Agriculture. He later worked for the U.S. Post Office; issued real estate appraisals
and served as a realty officer for the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Phoenix, Ariz., and
in Minneapolis. He later divorced. He was united in marriage to Diane Mitchell in
Phoenix, Ariz., in 1977. They moved to Minneapolis and later divorced. Samuel
moved to Waubun where he was the executive director for the White Earth Band of
Ojibwe. He taught at Waubun High School from 2002 to the present.
He was a member of the White Earth Band of Ojibwe, the Federal Retired
Employees Group, served on the board of the White Earth Tribal College and
enjoyed public speaking. He was a life-long learner and believed in the value of a
good education. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, boxing,
watching college football and eating a good hot dog.
He is survived by his daughters, Anne Rock of Phoenix, Ariz., and Eve (Lee)
Parmenter of Bemidji; sons, Byron (Laura) Rock of Bemidji, Randy Rock of St.
Paul and Reuben (Samantha) Rock of Memphis, Tenn.; brother, Rev. John
(Hanna) Rock of Bemidji; sisters, Mary (Andy) Favorite of Waubun, Stella Rock of
Roseville, Minn., and Anna (Tom) Magoris of Park Rapids; four grandchildren and
two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son, Robert; brothers, Melvin and Reuben, and
his parents.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. Monday, July 19, until 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 20, at the
