Thomas Saragosa, Sr., 71, passed away Dec. 28, 2009 in Bismarck, ND.
Services were held at 1 pm Tuesday, Dec 29th, at the Church of Saint Anne,
(Bismarck Funeral Home and Crematory) with Father Ed Wehner officiating.
Spring interment will be held in Thief River Falls, MN, on June 13th, 2010, at
St. Bernard’s Catholic Cemetery.
Tom was born Oct 8, 1938, in Goleta, CA. He was the 2nd child of Frank and
Sophie (Bernal) Zaragoza. After his biological father was killed in an auto
accident in 1940, Tom was raised by the only father he has ever known, his
hero, Edward “Pop” Leighton.
Tom graduated from Ventura Senior High School in 1956. Tom was drafted
and proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1962 -1964 as a Neuropsychiatric
Specialist. There he met Gladys Hill whom he married on September 25th,
1964. Together they raised 5 children. In 1968 he began his career in
Computer Information Technology, working for the Counties of Santa Barbara
and Ventura.
Tom enjoyed playing many sports including baseball, fast pitch softball, and
bowling. He also impacted many lives while he coached little league baseball,
youth basketball, and youth bowling. He enjoyed frequent family barbecues
and get-togethers with all his best friends, i.e., his mom and dad and his
brothers and sister.
During the 1990’s, Tom and Gladys moved to Red Lake, MN, and traveled
most weekends watching their son Tom, Jr., bowl in tournaments and earn
many awards. While in the summer [During the summers,] they traveled
weekends and watched their daughter D.J. play in softball tournaments.
In 2001 they moved to Bismarck, ND where Tom continued to watch and
support his kids and grandkids in sports, educational endeavors, and family
gatherings.
Tom is survived by his wife of 45 years, Gladys Hill Saragosa; two daughters,
Deanna (Randy Lovsness of Dawson, ND) Saragosa and Ramona Saragosa;
one son, Joshua Hill; his grandson, Jordan Saragosa; and his granddaughter,
Casey Lovsness, all of Bismarck; his step-grandsons, Brendan and Zachary
Lovsness of Aitkin, MN; his brothers Frank (Barbara) Saragosa of Baja, CA;
Dick (Mary) Zaragoza of Ventura, CA; Eddie (Emily) Leighton of Saticoy, CA;
Bill Leighton of Fillmore, CA; Stan (Rita) Leighton of Santa Clarita, CA; Kenny
(Brenda) Leighton of Whitney, TX; his sister Dottie Leighton Goldman of
Oxnard, CA; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Sophie (Bernal) Rodriguez; his
biological father, Frank Zaragoza; his dad, Edward “Pop” Leighton; his sons,
Tom Saragosa, Jr., and Steven Saragosa;
Tom was a true and committed friend, but his life, honor, and pride were his
family. Some men are born to be Dads; Tom was one of them.
