Vincent Edward “Makade Makwa” Smith Sr., whose name means Black Bear, 28,
of Red Lake, died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2010, at Innovis Health Center in Fargo, N.D.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 22, at the Red Lake Center in Red
Lake with the Rev. George Ross officiating. The wake will begin on Saturday at the
Red Lake Center and will continue until Monday’s service. Burial will be in the St.
John’s Episcopal Cemetery in Red Lake, under the direction of the Cease Family
Funeral Home of Bemidji.

Pallbearers will be Victor Whitehorse, Scott Pemberton Jr., Lucas Davenport,
Tobias Wind, Pat Norquay, Gerald Jourdain, Joe Folstrom and Dave Charwood.

Honorary pallbearers will be Rose Morgan, Shannon Barron, Verto Barron Jr.,
Raymond Geshick, Maryanne Morgan, Brittiany Johnson, Jeff Jourdain, Mike
Burris, Lorna and Al Kiehne, Filee Barron, Jedidiah Little, Red Lake Forestry, Red
Lake DNR and the Red Lake Detention staff.

He was born on Nov. 19, 1981, to Holly Smith, in Bayonne, N.J. He lived in New
Jersey, California, and Bemidji and later returned to Red Lake. He attended
school in Bemidji as a child. He received his high school GED and went on to
graduate with an associated degree with honors from the Red Lake Nation
College. He enjoyed many jobs in his life including Red Lake Gaming, Red Lake
Forestry, Waters Department, Red Lake Detention Center, numerous fire-fighting
crews and his later with Knife River Materials.

He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoyed traveling, gambling, telling jokes, meeting
new people, spending time with friends and family and being a devoted father.

He is survived by his children, Vincent Jr., Angelene Smith; mother; stepfather,
Raymond Geshick; brother, Victor (Eva) Whitehorse; grandmother, Rose Morgan;
special brothers, Lucas Davenport, Joe Folstrom; special sister, Brittiany (Scott)
Johnson; three uncles; an aunt; former wife, Lorene Lyons; step-child, Tanika
Lyons; and numerous nieces, a nephew and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father; grandparents; great-grandparents; and an
uncle.
