William Jourdain Sr., 90, of Red Lake, died Wednesday, Sept. 15, at the Red
Lake Hospital in Red Lake.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 20, at the St. Mary’s Mission
Catholic Church in Red Lake, with the Rev. Jerry Rogers officiating. A wake will
begin at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 19, at the Red Lake Community Center in Red
Lake, and will continue until the time of the services. Interment will be in his family
burial ground in Little Rock, Minn., under the direction of the Cease Family Funeral
Home of Bemidji.
Pallbearers will be William’s grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be Becky
Jourdain, Terin Cobenais, Jennifer, and William’s sons.
He was born on Sept. 22, 1919, to Charles and Bertha (Mason) Jourdain, in Red
Lake. He was raised and educated in Red Lake. He married Elsie Defoe on Nov.
15, 1940, in Redby. He joined the U.S. Army in 1943, serving in World War II in
Belgium and Germany. He served until 1945 and then re-enlisted, serving from
1947-1950. He returned home and worked for 20 years for the Red Lake High
School, five years for the HeadStart program and 25 years at the Red Lake
Sawmill. He enjoyed hunting, gardening, sports, news, riding through the woods
with his grandsons and growing trees, especially plum trees.
He is survived by his wife; children, William (Arlene) Jourdain Jr., Arlen Jourdain
Sr., Ron (Diane) Jourdain, Darlene (John) Jourdain, Rose Hinden, Pam (Bob)
Maxwell, Gary (Wendy) Jourdain, Dean (Lenetta) Jourdain, Gerald (Angel)
Jourdain, Gregory Jourdain, Linda (Allen) Brown; special grandson he raised,
Eugene Payer; 47 grandchildren; 73 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-
grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Karen Payer; seven
grandchildren; two brothers; and a sister.
