Darlene “PeeWee” Diane Johnson, 62, of Redby, Minnesota passed into the Spirit
World on Tuesday, February 22, 2011 at the Jourdain Perpich Extended Care
Facility in Red Lake, Minnesota after a year long battle with cancer. Surrounded
by family, she quietly slipped away on her late grandmother’s birthday.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, February 28, 2011 at the St.
Antipas Episcopal Church in Redby, with the Rev. George Ross officiating. A
wake will begin on Saturday, February 26th at the Redby Community Center in
Redby and will continue until the time of the funeral on Monday. Burial will take
place this spring at the St. Antipas Episcopal Cemetery in Redby. The Cease
Family Funeral Home of Blackduck assisted the family with arrangements.
Active Pallbearers will be Joe Bay Strong, Willie Strong, Jeff Roy, Charles
Johnson, Ira Johnson, Lester Strong, Herman Strong, and Jerry Jones, with
alternates, Tom Charnoski, Jr. and Bruce Jourdain, Jr.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Arlene Jourdain, Rose Cournoyer, Adelma Oakgrove,
Ruth Fevig, Joann Turney, Ramona Manuel, Margaret White, Charlotte Johnson,
Sheila & Debbie Johnson, Melanie, Sue, Beth, Nicole and Alyssa Roy, Mary
Johnson, Linda Johnson, Tracy Ann Kingbird, Clarissa Strong, Kathleen Strong,
Arlen “Skidge” Lussier, John Maxwell & Dwight Johnson.
Darlene was born January 2, 1949 at the family home in Redby, the daughter of
Frank “Ole” and Lucille (Holinday) Johnson. Due to lifelong health issues with
Epilepsy, Darlene was unable to finish her education, but did attend schools in
Red Lake. Her Indian name Zoongi-gah-bow-eke-quay, which means “Strong
Standing Women”, was handed down to her from her maternal grandmother (Lucy).
She enjoyed going to casinos, playing cribbage and bingo. She always enjoyed
going to pow-wows with her family throughout her life, where she made many
friends. Her favorite things to do were being outdoors, or going out riding to watch
for Eagles.
She is survived by her sisters, Yvonne “Moonie” Johnson, and Elaine Johnson,
both of Redby, Margaret White and Charlotte Johnson, both of Bemidji; a brother,
Joe Johnson of Bemidji; a special sister, Alyssa Roy of Redby; a special brother
Dwight “Binky” Johnson of Redby; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and
nephews, aunt, cousins and other extended family on the Johnson and Strong side.
Preceding her to the final resting place is; her parents, Ole and Lucille Johnson;
her brothers, Edward “Rug” Johnson, and Arnold “Tiger” Johnson; her sister,
Delores Ann; and several infant brothers and sisters; her grandparents, Ed & Lucy
(Strong) Holinday, and Jack “Gi-chi-ayabay” & Louise (Buckanaga) Johnson; her
aunt, Ennis Johnson; and her uncles, Little Frankie and Albert Johnson.
